You found a trading platform that looks professional and promises steady returns. Maybe a friend recommended it, or an advert did. Before you send a single dollar, give it ten minutes. This check will not catch every scam, but it catches most of them, and it costs you nothing.
Minute 5 to 6: how old is the website?
Type the domain into any free WHOIS lookup. A platform claiming ten years of experience on a website registered three months ago is telling you a story. Many scam sites live for less than a year before they vanish and reappear under a new name.
Minute 7 to 8: test the promises
| Fixed daily or weekly returns | Real markets go up and down |
|---|---|
| Guaranteed profit | Nobody can guarantee trading results |
| Bonus that locks your deposit | Often used to block withdrawals |
| Pressure to deposit today | Urgency is a sales tactic |
| Payment only in crypto | Hard to reverse, easy to steal |
Already sent money to a platform you now doubt?
Tell us the platform name and we will look at it with you.
Minute 9 to 10: search what others say
Search the platform name plus the words scam, withdrawal and review on Google and Bing. Then search it on YouTube and TikTok. Be careful: some glowing reviews are written by the scammers. Look for repeated stories about blocked withdrawals and new fees. One complaint can be a mistake. Ten with the same pattern is a warning.
Signs that should stop you on the spot
- ✗ A stranger online introduced you to it
- ✗ The account manager asks you to install AnyDesk or TeamViewer
- ✗ You were told to keep the investment secret
- ✗ The app is only available through a download link, not an official store
- ✗ Withdrawals need a fee paid first
If the platform passes the check
Passing these checks does not make a platform safe. It only means it did not fail the obvious tests. Start small, try a withdrawal early, and never invest money you cannot afford to lose. If a small withdrawal is delayed or comes with new conditions, stop depositing.
Already invested?
If you are reading this after depositing, do not panic and do not send more. Save screenshots of your account, your deposits and every chat. Then report your concerns to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), Action Fraud or your local police, and call your bank about any card or bank payments.
Can a scam site have a real licence number?
Yes. Some copy the number of a real firm. Always check that the website address on the regulator record matches.
Are apps in official stores always safe?
No. Some scam apps slip through. Store listing is not proof of safety.
A quick example
Sam was shown a platform by a new contact on LinkedIn. The site listed a London address and a licence badge. In ten minutes he found that the domain was four months old, the regulator had no record of the company and the address belonged to a virtual office used by hundreds of firms. A search on YouTube showed two videos from people who could not withdraw. He did not deposit. That ten minute check saved him from a loss that others on the same platform later reported.
You can do the same. Keep a short note of what you found for each platform you check, so you can compare and spot repeat patterns.
Minute 1 to 2: who is behind it?
Scroll to the bottom of the website. A real broker names its legal company, its registered address and its regulator, with a licence number. If you only find a contact form, a Telegram link or a vague line like “regulated worldwide”, that is your first red flag.
Minute 3 to 4: check the regulator yourself
Never trust a licence badge on the site itself. Go to the regulator directly. Search the company name on the FCA Warning List and the IOSCO I-SCAN, which collects warnings from regulators around the world. If the name appears on a warning list, stop there.
