If you are searching for how to recover stolen crypto, you are probably scared, angry and short on sleep. That is normal. This guide is the honest version: what can actually bring money back, what cannot, and what to do in the next hour so you do not lose more.
The truth about getting stolen crypto back
Crypto transactions cannot be cancelled like a card payment. Once coins leave your wallet, nobody can press undo. Recovery happens in a different way: by finding where the coins went, and reaching a business that can freeze them. That business is usually an exchange, because scammers almost always need one to turn crypto back into cash.
So the real question is not “can someone hack the scammer?” Nobody honest can. The real question is whether your funds touched an exchange that will respond to police or a court. That is why speed and records matter more than anything else.
What actually works, in order
- Stop all payments. No more deposits, taxes, unlock fees or upgrade charges. Every extra payment goes to the same people.
- Write down every transaction. Date, amount, coin, the wallet address you sent to and the transaction hash (TXID).
- Tell your bank or card issuer today if you bought the crypto with a card or bank transfer. Banks have their own fraud teams and time limits.
- Report to the police and a national fraud centre. In the US that is the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), in the UK Action Fraud, in Canada the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, in Australia Scamwatch.
- Contact the exchange you sent from and ask them to flag the receiving address. Give them your police reference number.
- Get your case reviewed by people who trace funds on the blockchain and can show you where the money went.

What does not work
| Paying a hacker to break in | Does not exist. It is a second scam. |
|---|---|
| Paying the platform a release fee | Money goes straight to the scammers. |
| Waiting to see if they pay | Time lets funds move through more wallets. |
| Deleting chats out of embarrassment | Destroys the evidence you need most. |
Your evidence checklist
Investigators and banks work from records, not memories. Before you do anything else, save these in one folder:
- Screenshots of the website or app, including your account balance
- Every chat on WhatsApp, Telegram, email or social media
- Bank statements and card receipts
- Wallet addresses and transaction hashes
- Names, phone numbers and usernames used by the people you dealt with
How long do I have?
Act within days, not weeks. Card chargeback windows are often around 120 days from the payment, and exchanges move faster when a report is fresh. If months have passed, still report it. Old cases are traced and linked to new ones all the time.
Can stolen crypto really be recovered?
Sometimes. It depends on where the funds went and how fast action is taken. Anyone who promises a guaranteed recovery is not being honest with you.
Should I pay to recover stolen crypto?
Never pay anyone who contacts you first offering recovery, and never pay a fee to a platform to release your own money.
Is it worth reporting a small amount?
Yes. Small reports help link scam wallets and protect the next person.
Where to search for help, and what to type
Most people start by typing “recover stolen crypto” into Google, YouTube or TikTok. Be careful with what comes back. Many of the top videos and ads are run by the same networks that steal the money in the first place. A real helper will never DM you first, never ask for a fee in crypto, and never promise a guaranteed result.
Safer searches include the name of your country plus “report crypto fraud”, which usually leads to an official police or government page. If you use ChatGPT or another assistant, ask it for the official reporting site in your country, then open that site yourself rather than clicking a link someone sent you.
What a good case review looks like
A proper review starts with your records, not your wallet. It should explain where your funds went, whether they reached an exchange, and which agencies or banks should be told. It should be clear about what is possible and what is not. If anyone asks for your seed phrase, your passwords or remote access to your device, end the conversation.
