You lose signal for no reason. Minutes later your email, your exchange and your wallet are being accessed by someone else. A SIM swap attack moves your phone number to a criminal’s SIM, so the codes meant for you go to them. If this is happening, speed matters. Here is what to do, in order.
Think your number was hijacked?
Report it to Ettran and get help with the next steps.
How a SIM swap works
- A criminal gathers your details from leaks and social media.
- They contact your mobile carrier pretending to be you.
- Your number is moved to their SIM, and your phone goes dead.
- They receive your SMS codes and reset your passwords.
- They drain exchange accounts and wallets that rely on SMS codes.
Do this in the first hour
- ✗ Call your mobile carrier from another phone and report a SIM swap. Ask them to lock and restore your number.
- ✗ Log in to your email from a device you trust and change the password.
- ✗ Change passwords on every exchange and banking account.
- ✗ Remove SMS as a two factor method and switch to an authenticator app.
- ✗ Contact your exchanges and ask them to freeze withdrawals.
Secure your accounts properly
| Weak | SMS codes, which a SIM swap defeats |
|---|---|
| Better | An authenticator app on your device |
| Best | A hardware security key for your main accounts |
Save the evidence
Note the exact time your signal dropped, screenshots of any login alerts, and the transactions that left your accounts, with their hashes. This timeline shows the attack and helps your carrier, your bank and the police.
Report it
- Report to the police and get a crime reference.
- Report to a fraud centre such as the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), Action Fraud or your local equivalent.
- Complain to your mobile carrier in writing and ask how the swap was allowed.
- Tell the exchanges where funds were taken and give them the receiving addresses.
Lock the door for next time
- ✗ Set a port out PIN or passcode with your mobile carrier.
- ✗ Use an authenticator app or hardware key, never SMS, for crypto.
- ✗ Keep your phone number off public profiles.
- ✗ Use a separate email for crypto that nobody knows.
Can the funds be recovered?
If the stolen crypto reached an exchange that can freeze accounts, a fast police report gives the best chance. Tracing follows the funds on the public ledger. Nobody can promise recovery, and anyone who guarantees it for an upfront fee is running a second scam.
How did they get my codes without my phone?
The SIM swap sends your calls and texts to their device, including SMS codes.
Is an authenticator app safe from this?
Yes. App based codes live on your device and are not tied to your phone number.
Why carriers are the weak point
Most SIM swaps succeed because a call centre agent is talked into moving a number without proper checks. That is why a port out PIN matters so much. It forces anyone asking to move your number to prove they are you first. Set one today, even if nothing has gone wrong, because it is the single step that stops this attack before it starts.
The short version
- Act within the first hour.
- Reclaim the number, then secure email and exchanges.
- Drop SMS codes for an app or a key.
- Set a carrier port out PIN.
