Verdict up front: Global copytrade offers a “Secure wallet — Deposit, withdraw” and copying of “vetted trader profiles”. It has 100+ downloads, names no company or regulator, and is filed on Google Play under Business rather than Finance.

The word “wallet”

Among the bullet points: “Secure wallet — Deposit, withdraw, and review your complete transaction history.”

That single line changes what this app is. Holding client money is the most heavily regulated thing a financial business can do, anywhere. It requires authorisation, segregated accounts at a real bank, audited reconciliation and, in most jurisdictions, a compensation scheme. An app with a hundred downloads, no named company and no regulator is offering to hold deposits.

“Secure” here is an adjective the developer typed. It is not a custody arrangement, and nothing on the listing says where the money would actually sit.

“Vetted trader profiles”

The app promises you can “Browse vetted trader profiles, view performance stats, and copy their strategies automatically”.

Vetted by whom, against what? On a regulated copy-trading platform the answer is specific: the provider verifies identity, calculates performance from executed trades on its own books, and publishes drawdown alongside return because regulators require the risk to be as visible as the reward. None of that is described here, and there is no obvious way for a hundred-download app to have vetted anybody.

Google Play has a Finance category, where users expect financial products and where a certain amount of scrutiny lands. This app — which takes deposits and allocates them to trading strategies — is filed under Business.

It is the third variation of the same move we keep finding: mining simulators in Finance, signal apps in Productivity, a deposit-taking copy-trading app in Business. Category placement is chosen, and it is chosen to control who sees the app and how carefully.

Before you deposit anywhere

Ask three questions and require them in writing. Which legal entity receives my money? Which regulator authorises it, and under what number? Which bank holds client funds, and are they segregated from the company’s own? A firm that can answer all three in one line is worth considering. A firm that cannot answer any of them is asking you to take a deposit on trust from a stranger.
